Annual Pastoral Care Volunteer Luncheon with special guest Akeem Haynes

You’re invited to have lunch on us on May 24th, 2017 at Pastoral & Spiritual Care’s annual thank you to honour the generosity of our volunteers. Please interpret pastoral care volunteering in the widest sense – whether you’re in ministry, volunteer formally as part of a pastoral care committee, or give of your time in the many ways the church offers care to others. Check out the poster for all the details.

This year we are excited to welcome Akeem Haynes as our special guest speaker. Join Akeem as he takes us on his journey from a thirteen year old boy who arrived home from school one day to find his mom on the front steps, in tears because she couldn’t pay the electrical bill and had no money for food. A young boy who took his promise to his mom that everything would be okay seriously. “At thirteen, I believed in three things: I could be whatever I wanted to be, I believed in myself, and I believed in my promise that everything would be okay . . . When I made my mom that promise, the next day during football practice I went a little harder, I took my schooling a little more seriously . . . I woke up a little earlier each day . . . I started asking questions, I started finding answers for myself.” Eleven years later Akeem stood on the podium in Rio along with the other members of Canada’s 4X100 relay team with a bronze medal and with a new Canadian record to boot.

“The mere thought of letting my past determine my future was not something I would ever accept.”
